Introducing Gmail Paper

April 1st, 2007

Yeap, it is Free!

“The cost of postage is offset with the help of relevant, targeted, unobtrusive advertisements, which will appear on the back of your Gmail Paper prints in red, bold, 36 pt Helvetica. No pop-ups, no flashy animations—these are physically impossible in the paper medium.”

Well seems to be another Google April 1st prank along with Google TiSP. So the the 20% of time that Google employees get to think creatively is spent mostly on April 1st gags? They all seem so well thought of and made! :)

Has anyone else noticed that the Google Maps link is now on the front page of Google UK? (or has it been there for ages and I for some reason just realised it now?)

Update: It has been on Google.com for quite a while now but just recently added to the www.google.co.uk page.

I am feeling lucky no more?

It is a know fact that google ranks wikipedia entries higher in it’s search results. It should therefore replace the underused ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’  button to ‘Take me to Wikipedia’ button and save everyone the trouble!

1. Go to www.google.com
2. At the box where you search, type in this format.

?intitle:index.of? mp3 ***

The *** is for you to replace it with the artist and song title.
3. Click on the Google Search button.
4. Now you should see a list of all the websites that has the MP3 that you’re looking for.

Here’s a step-by-step example of searching for Beyonce and Jay-Z’s “Deja Vu” MP3.
1. Go to google and type “?intitle:index.of? mp3 beyonce dejavu”

2. Here are the results. Not necessarily that the #1 result contains the MP3. Sometimes you have to try a few sites.
google mp3 search result

3. Found Beyonce - Deja Vu, but it’s a freemasons club mix version.

mp3 index

4. Clicking on that link and it brought me to a site where I can start downloading the MP3.

5. Right click on the text that says “Download Now” and select “Save Target As” for Internet Explorer or “Save Link As” for Firefox. It will start downloading…

What are you doing here is entering into a server and downloading directly from it. You can also specify a different extension such as AVI for movies, PDF for ebooks and etc… Just change the mp3 to the extension you’re looking for.

Google - I am feeling lucky…

January 31st, 2007

Search for ‘Search’ on www.google.com and click on I am feeling lucky…

What do you see? Irony? ;)

It takes you to Live Search!

Update: March 3rd 2007, It now takes you to www.google.com. So google did correct it’s error.

Goolge has made a slight update to it’s Image search. It’s not clear how much else of the search engine they’ve updated if at all, but now offers an AJAX’d up (as everything seems to be nowadays) interface where you hover over an image you like and it displays information for it. Check it out - http://images.google.com and type something in.

Google and the nonsense page

January 8th, 2007

After sorting out my AdSense account, I was asked to participate in a customer service feedback which was fair enough - I went through the forms and filled it out and noticed the URL which I had never seen before. Google Services is a dummy-service and is designed for backend management of forms, scripts and other feedback stuff for users. The URL is: http://services.google.com/. What made me laugh though:

This is hilarious, whether it’s intentionally funny or meant to be serious, I find it funny. The space there isn’t blank is it - it’s got text on it saying that “this space intentionally left blank”.

Classic Google… gotta love them… (unless your Microsoft and they hate them)
