Automatically Start YouTube Video Playback
May 3rd, 2007
Hack MSN Spaces has an article on how to Auto-start any YouTube video. When you add a YouTube video to your blog or website it does not start playing automatically. With this simple hack it is possible.
- Go to YouTube and search for the video you want to play on your Space.
- Copy the embed code that is given for the video
- Open notepad or a new blog entry and paste the give code
For example, I got:
- Modify the code by adding &autoplay=1 after the URL which is shown highlighted above. (This URL will be different in your case as it is a different video)
I got:
- Paste this modified code on your Space / blog / website and your YouTube will start to play automatically.
- Done!

Please don’t do this on your sites, people! It’ll be even more annoying than autoplaying background music, especially on slower connections!
Then again I have the Flashblock extension for Firefox anyway, which guarantees that I have to click at least once to play Flash content. Which means that with Youtube videos I have to click twice sometimes, but I don’t really mind that (and I might just whitelist such things). And I’ve just found out that the stupid EOLAS patent means that MS have made users of IE have to “Click to activate this plugin” anyway, by default…

This is handy for creating pop up windows with a video auto starting. However the autostart variable changes from one video sharing site to another. The following link is a complete tutorial on how to auto start videos from YouTube, DailyMotion, Google Video, MetaCafe, MySpace…..etc.
