Breaking the Myth of Megapixels
February 9th, 2007
“The more megapixels a camera has, the better the pictures.” Is this true?
“Advertisements declare a camera’s megapixel rating as though it’s a letter grade, implying that a 7-megapixel model is necessarily better than a 5-megapixel model.” But for whom? Do we really need it? Can we save money?
“For the nonprofessional, five or six megapixels is plenty, even if you intend to make poster-size prints.” After a certain point megapixels don’t matter.

It is an interesting read for anyone who just wants to take pictures of their nights out and friends and could save themselves a lot of money if they are thinking of buying a new digital camera.

Windows Home Server remote access revealed
February 8th, 2007
Windows Home Server has been rather a big focal point for most people, as it’s a server operating system which is meant to simplify life for home users. However people have been a bit confused as how they access their server remotely. Well here’s the answer.
Once you have your Windows Home Server setup, you’ll be able to set up the remote access. Microsoft will give you a designated web address (which you can customise to some extent) which runs in the form of http://servername.homeserver.com. Currently www.homeserver.com points to the Microsoft PressPass entry regarding Windows Home Server.
Interesting eh?
You heard it here first!

Windows Mobile 6 impending release
February 8th, 2007
Engadget, one of the world’s biggest blog websites, has come up with a whole load of Windows Mobile 6 (codenamed Crossbow) screenshots and images. Not only that, they have a whole wealth of reports and information regarding this new software.
Windows Live will play heavily within Windows Mobile 6, as more and more people are working on the go using their mobile devices to keep them connected - I do it, most people do it. The problem is with all Windows Mobile software, is that to get the new Crossbow release once it is out in the world, we’ll have to buy brand new mobile devices which support the software. It’s not entirely fair, but I guess it’s how it goes.

Disable Snap Previews
February 6th, 2007
Snap preview? What is it?
Snap preview is a feature that pulls up a small, in-browser pop-up preview of a linked site when you hover over it. It is really annoying. Do you remember seeing it somewhere? TechCrunch perhaps? (So tempted to put a link to TechCrunch with a snap preview feature on it right now!!) Well it is really irritating and many other bloggers agree too. Just because a high-profile blog uses it doesn’t mean it is good.
“So.. How do I disable it?”
“You just need to go to the Snap website and download a cookie that deactivates all of those preview windows. Install it, refresh any offending sites, and you’ll be clear of those irritating little bubbles. It’ll only work until you clear your cookies”

Tish and Piffle - Week 1
February 3rd, 2007
Each weekend, we’ll sum up the whole of the week and do a caption from a popular image… it can be an old image, a new image, but somewhere along the lines it’ll be funny and rude no doubt.
With Windows Vista being released this week, I thought I’d pay homage to the Gates man by humiliating him once more. Enjoy.

Windows Live ID - another possible breakthrough
February 1st, 2007
I was attending an important dinner only a few days ago, and before the big posh dinner was this presentation regarding the Microsoft Passport Network, and more importantly about the new Windows Live ID system. I was shown a concept design about a new breakthrough which would save so much time - similarly to how the Windows Live ID system works already. No confirmed plans on whether this will work fully, whether this will be rolled out soon or whether this is actually in development now, but it’s certainly interesting. As I said, it was only a screenshot concept and it was gone before I knew it… so I mocked up a design which is as-near-to-the-actual image as I could possibly get it. I even used Connect to show it.
You sign-in to a Microsoft website (say Microsoft Connect) with testuser1@hotmail.com and you check out your beta programs, check the newsgroups and the latest news. Then realise that the specific beta program you wanted to check out is on your other account. Instead of signing out, going to the sign-out pages, then taking you back to the main page of the website - you click the Windows Live ID “Key” (as seen in the demonstration), select your username or type it in - and it refreshes that exact page you’re on with your new credentials.
It’ll save time - effort - bandwidth probably - it’s a brilliant idea. This image:
and
will simply be replaced, as so many Microsoft websites have got it configured with this image at certain dimensions, it’s easier to replace the image with the exact same dimensions (and thus not distorting the image) than changing every single web page.
It’s a cool idea - even if they don’t use it, it’s certainly something which could be used in the future to simplify the sign-in and sign-out process throughout Microsoft websites.
